A Skydiggers Christmas w/ special guest Daniel Greaves from the Watchmen

Orillia - catch A Skydiggers Christmas on December 5th at St. Paul's Centre, with support from Daniel Greaves of The Watchmen.

For over 25 years Skydiggers’ friends and fans have reunited over the holidays at Toronto’s Legendary Horseshoe Tavern to celebrate the season to the soundtrack of the band’s distinctive rootsy Christmas tunes and Skydiggers’ classics, and this year they’re taking it on the road. “We’ve realized that the most moving moments of the season are more than just expressions of glad tidings and comfort and joy,” says Skydigger Andy Maize. “That there are moments of melancholy, regret and truth that are, in their own way, as much a part of the Christmas experience as any joyous carol. We want to put on a show that both celebrates the season while leaving room for quieter, more personal moments.

The Lightfoot Days Sunday Service - St. Paul's United Church in Orillia - Sunday Nov, 3

The Lightfoot Days Sunday Service takes place at St. Paul's United Church in Orillia on Sunday, November 3 at 10:25 am. This is the very venue where Gordon Lightfoot's illustrious career began.

This service will showcase the Orillia Community Children's Choir, directed by Julia Johnston, as they perform a new composition co-created by Julia Johnston and Dan McCoy. This innovative piece harmoniously blends the voices of the Orillia Children’s Choir with a historic early recording of a 12-year-old Gordon Lightfoot singing in the St. Paul’s Choir. This unique arrangement enables us to experience the illusion of Gordon performing "live" alongside Julia’s Children’s Choir.

We will also have a special video message from Liona Boyd, the “First Lady of the Guitar”.
Gordon Lightfoot played a pivotal role in providing her with one of the most significant opportunities early in her career when she opened for him during his tour in the 1970s.

Also, you will all get to hear a newly composed hymn in memory of the late Reverend Karen Hilfman-Milson; a friend of Gordon's.

Additionally, the St. Paul's Senior Choir, the Orillia Children’s Choir, and the entire congregation will join together to perform the early Gordon Lightfoot song "Rich Man's Spiritual" (1966).

Orillia Silver Band presents "Theatre Treats" featuring: Alexandra Teske at the St. Paul's Centre

The Orillia Silver Band invites you to join them to experience a wonderful selection of theatre music. Our Theatre Treats Concert takes place on Saturday, November 2, 2024, 7:30 pm at the St. Paul’s Centre in Orillia.

Renowned Soprano vocal soloist Alexandra Teske will be joining the band for some terrific musical selections from Broadway, both classic and modern. Alexandra will sing the haunting No One is Alone from Stephen Sondheim’s show “Into The Woods” and the riveting Being Alive from Sondheim’s Broadway favourite “Company”. No vocal theatre music collection is complete without some music of George Gershwin, and Alexandra will sing an engaging medley of Gershwin’s most well-known show tunes.

The band’s music director, Neil Barlow, says that the band has prepared many great selections beyond Ms. Teske’s vocal works to entice music lovers. Some of these tunes include the ever-popular Overture to The Italian in Algiers by Rossini, and the stirring Winsford March by J.A. Greenwood. Lovers of operatic favourites will be transported by a performance of Wagner’s Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral from the opera “Lohengrin”.

The band will feature its own euphonium artist Paul Rayment playing the towering work for euphonium and band called A Spiritual Fantasy by Canadian Doug Court. Music from the cinematic theatre will be represented with a performance of the wildly exciting theme from The Incredibles by Michael Giacchino. And, of course, all theatre music concerts need a high-energy collection of classic Broadway favourites. Breezin’ Down Broadway by arranger Goff Richards will have everyone tapping their toes and singing along!

Please don’t miss this exciting evening of vocal in instrumental theatre music!

Since that time, thousands of Ontario residents have watched in astonishment as singer Don Murphy taps into the very essence that is Eddie Vedder. Pearl Jam fans, the devoted and casual alike, tend to leave Vitalogy shows in awe. It usually doesn't take enthusiastic Pearl Jam fans very long to realize that Vitalogy is simply as good as it gets when it comes to tribute bands.

The Sharing Place Benefit Concert - Sat, October 19 at St. Paul's Centre

The Orillia Concert Band is joining forces with the Orillia Big Band for our first concert of the season. That’s right! It’s time for our fund-raiser concert and this year on Saturday, October 19, under the direction of our wonderful leader, Randy Hoover, we’re going to offer a great evening of fun music and raise money all in support Orillia’s food bank, The Sharing Place.

Let’s all get together and make St. Paul’s jump! The Concert Band’s amazing clarinet master, Kevin Weis, will blow us all away with the Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra by Carl Maria von Weber. And you’ll hum along to such well-loved Mancini treasures as Peter Gun, the Baby Elephant Walk, and Moon River. The Big Band will play the marvellous theme from the Pink Panther and you can picture Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers) at his best and funniest. Then they’ll take you to Spain! with Chick Corea. And so much more!

All profits from the gate and free-will donations will go to The Sharing Place so come on out, Orillia! Let’s see how much we can raise post-Thanksgiving and as the Christmas Season approaches.

Missa Gaia/ Earth Mass - April 21, 2024 at 3 pm - St. Pauls' Centre

🌿 Missa Gaia/ Earth Mass 🌿

Please join us for a performance of Jazz musician Paul Winter’s Missa Gaia (Earth Mass) this Sunday at 3pm in the sanctuary, presented by the St. Paul’s choir and friends. This special event is dedicated to celebrating Earth Day (April 22nd) and honoring the cherished memory of Rev. Karen Hilfman Millson.

📅 Date: Sunday, April 21, 2024 🕒 Time: 3:00 PM 📍 Location: St. Paul’s Centre

We will also be Live Streaming it on YouTube, here is the link:
https://youtu.be/xCqfSEa6fCo

Prepare to be captivated by a multi-media presentation that harmoniously blends choral and instrumental music, dance, readings and photography, creating an experience that echoes the spirit of our planet.

The 7-piece instrumental ensemble accompanying the choir features Peter Voisey playing soprano and 'sopranino' saxophones, Alyssa Wright on cello, Dan McCoy on pipe organ, along with piano, drums, tympani and a variety of percussion instruments all under the direction of conductor Blair Bailey.

Created in 1981 by jazz musician Paul Winter for the ecumenical cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, Missa Gaia is a musical and visual celebration embracing all forms of life on earth.   Paul Winter writes, “I envisioned a celebration that was both ecological  and ecumenical, one that would embrace all life on earth.”

The musical stylings of this 'Earth Mass' range from traditional hymn-tunes to African inspired rhythms, ancient plainchant to Brazilian baiao folk rhythms, Classical-style choral writing to modern jazz harmonies.  Some of the choral movements are interspersed with pre-recorded whale songs, wolf and harp seal pup calls, and the haunting cry of the loon.  Accompanying the music will be interpretive dance and stunning visual images of nature and the environment projected on the large screens.

A free-will offering will be collected with the proceeds going to 'greening' initatives at St. Paul's.

We deeply appreciate your support for the choir and this unique tribute to celebrate 'Earth Day.'
